The general-purpose concept was to equip light machine squad with universal weapon. The weapon could be provided with two alternative barrels, a light one with attached bipod for use in the light squad automatic role and a heavy barrel, four inches longer, for use in sustained fire role, in which the gun is mounted on a tripod of unusual appearance and design.
